Chapel of the Shroud and Shroud Museum

I tried searching but didn’t really find anything. My group will be in Italy for 10 days in September 2026. I want to do a day trip from Lake Como to Turin to see the subject places only and maybe do lunch. Can anyone tell me if I need to purchase anything in advance to get in and how much time I should plan. Thank you.

I was in Turin in 2023 and happened to walk by the Chapel of the Holy Shroud. I simply walked in. No lines and no tickets needed. It is a beautiful building and there's some interesting information but you don't actually see the Shroud. I did not visit any of the associated buildings or museums. In case you haven't found it, here's the website.: https://museireali.beniculturali.it/en/chapel-holy-shroud/

Thanks for the link, Trotter. I had not found that one. I realize the Shroud won’t be on display. My husband and I have a huge interest in the history of the Shroud so want to visit what we can while in Italy. There is a lot to see in Turin related to other history and all the tours are mainly for that. There is so little information on the Chapel and the Museum of the Shroud. But, those are the things we want to see.

I was in Turin in June 2025.

The Shroud museum is small and I don’t think advanced tickets are even available. There are docents available that take visitors to watch a video and then walk you through part of the building. They end in the basement display space where you can stay as long as you want. We arrived just as a tour was starting for another couple and they paused to wait for us to purchase our ticket before joining them.

The chapel in the Cathedral has no separate admission and the shroud itself is not viewable (unless they’ve announced a viewing during that time, in which case all my information is wrong and things will be crowded). Nonetheless, a visit is worthwhile. You should also consider visiting the royal palace to be in the chapel where the shroud used to be held. Tickets are necessary for that and can be purchased in advance online. The chapel can be partially viewed from the cathedral, but I still recommend visiting from the palace side if you have time.

How much time this will take fully depends on how long you want to linger. The museum could be done quickly in half an hour; I read every word and was there for almost two hours. In the cathedral, you can see the chapel in five minutes or linger much longer. The palace chapel will take the most time because you must go through other rooms of the palace to get there. But, again, if you wanted the fastest possible visit I would say it could be done in 30 minutes.

Have a great trip.

We were posting at the same time, so in response to your second post -

If you are interested in the history, I recommend Andrew Casper’s book An Artful Relic: the Shroud of Turin in Baroque Italy (2021). He’s an art historian and incorporates lots of ways the shroud has been reproduced and represented. I read the book before my trip; it really enriched the experience.

Thanks, HK. Your summary helps. I just wasn’t finding what I needed. So, we’ll be looking at about 5 hours on boats & trains to see about 2 hours of things in Turin. We only have the one day and we’ll actually be in Menaggio on Lake Como. So, extra travel is involved. May not be worth the time this visit. I’ll ask the rest of my group what they want to do. Appreciate the help.
