Does anyone know what time the monks are chanting at Basilica di San Maniato?
RS said 5:30, my inn host said 6. We were there for at least an hour in that time frame and didn't hear any chanting, unless what is a mass with two monks singing the liturgy is considered chanting.
Still, I thought the views were more pleasing at San Miniato than the Michaelangelo viewpoint.
From the basilica's website:
Sundays and holidays: 8.30am, 10.00am, 11.30am and 5.3pm . The 5.30pm
celebration is in Latin and Gregorian chant. Weekdays: 7:15 and 17:45
, in Latin and in Gregorian chant.
We were there for the 5:30 service. It was held in the crypt, not in the main part of the church. Do not expect some idealized version of a large assembly of monks all chanting. This is a small monastery, and you'll only see a few actually there. It is still a wonderful experience. But this is the Mass. If you only want to listen to the Vespers service, it is at 6:30.
Hi - This is the church's website:
https://www.sanminiatoalmonte.it
This is the page for services and visiting hours:
https://www.sanminiatoalmonte.it/contatti/
Running the text through online translation for services (Orari delle celebrazioni eucaristiche):
Hours of Eucharistic celebrations:
Sundays and holidays: 8.30am, 10.00am, 11.30am and 5.30pm.
The 17:30 (5:30 PM) celebration is in Latin and in Gregorian chant.
Weekdays: 7:15 and 17:45 (5:45 PM) in Latin and in Gregorian chant.
To participate in the first song (service):
Monday-Saturday at 7:00, with entry from Via delle Porte Sante.
Sunday 8:15
For visiting hours:
Monday-Saturday 9:30-13:00; 15:00-19:00 (winter) or 19:00 in the summer period
Sunday 8:15-19:00 (winter) or 19:30 in the summer period
This is a wonderful old church, and the attached cemetery (Cimitero delle Porte Sante) is an interesting ramble so get there in daylight. I believe the hours are 8:00 -5:00 from Oct. 1 to March 31, 8:00 - 6:00 from April 1 - Sept 30, and 8:00 - 1:00 on Sundays and holidays.

So, I did hear the "chanting". Good to know. It was a neat experience and I recognized it as a communion liturgy which is interesting since I am and was raised Lutheran. It is also another occasion where different peoples are more alike than different. ;) Sorry, travel makes me sentimental!
