We are taking the train from Florence to La Spezia enroute to Vernazza. We have a booked ticket to La Spezia and then need to take a local train. Is it the same station?
Thanks.
Marsha, Could you clarify whether you've already purchased a ticket from Florence to La Spezia? If so, I would have suggested purchasing the ticket once you arrive in Italy (perhaps a day or so before travel), but use Vernazza as your final destination. That way you don't have to stop and buy another ticket in La Spezia. Note that there are four stations in the La Spezia area - La Spezia Migliarina, Ca' di Boschetti and La Spezia Marittima in the port area. If your ticket is to La Spezia Centrale, THAT'S the station you'll need for transfer to the local trains. Happy travels!
We have purchased the ticket to La Spezia from Florence.
The station is La Spezia Central so thank you for your response.
Just a hint that you can purchase your ticket from La Spezia Centrale to Vernazza while you are in the train station in Florence. This can save you time in the La Spezia train station. From La Spezia Centrale to Vernazza, you will be on a Regionale train. No choice here. The ticket will be an open ticket with no train number, departure time or seat assignment. The open ticket is good for 60 days or until you validate it in the little yellow machine after which its only good for 6 hours. Just don't validate it in Florence. Validate it in La Spezia Centrale. If you have some time before your train to Vernazza, and you will be in the CT for 2-3 days or more, you might consider jumping into the TI office there in the station and buying a Cinque Terre Treno card for 1, 2, 3 or 7 days. It provides unlimited train travel and free access to the trails for the period of time purchased. Yes, there are trolls in booths on the famous CT trails that will charge you to pass.
Thanks for the suggestion of the Cinque Terra Card. We are in Vernazza for 3 days so that's perfect.
Marsha, make sure that it is the Cinque Terre TRENO card. Not just the Cinque Terre card. There used to be two cards. One for the parks and the Treno card that got you on the trains. Now I see that there is a third that includes the ferry. Here's a link that better describes all three. http://www.parconazionale5terre.it/5terrecardsnuovo_2.asp?id_lingue=2
