Changing trains at Milano Centrale and Levanto

Hi,

I will be arriving at Milano Centrale on Malpensa Express, and might have to make a tight connection. I am supposed to catch the 12:10pm InterCity 665 to Levanto where I switch to a regional to get to Vernazza.

Does anyone have any idea which platform IC 665 typically leaves from? I remember reading that Malpensa Express usually arrives at Platforms 1 or 2. Is this correct? Looking at the Milano Centrale map it seems all platforms are at the same level, only that, Platforms 1, 2 are off in a different corner of the level. Can anyone shed light on this?

Also, I have a 6 min. window at the Levanto train station to switch to the 15:05 departure to Vernazza. Is this a fairly straightforward connection to make or is there a change of levels required? I suppose if I miss the 15:05, I can catch a later one but I hope to be as prepared as I can to make the connection.

Any insights will be highly appreciated.

Thanks!!

If you are arriving at 8:40 am, and your plane is on time, should have no problems. The last comfortable connecting train is at 10:43 am, getting you there at 11:35 am. If you have to take the next train, it will be extremely tight, 5 minutes, which probably is not doable.

Have you already bought a nonrefundable ticket? If not, you can buy a later connecting train to Vernazza.

Don't worry about the connection in Levanto. It is a small station, you may not even have to change platforms. If you did miss it due to a late arrival, you can get the next train in 30 minutes. As discussed, that portion of the ticket will be a time limited Regionale ticket, so it will still be valid.

Note that platform changes are not uncommon, check the board.

It could be Platform 20 today, and Platform 7 tomorrow. You'll get that answer when you arrive in Milan and look on the board.

Vishal,

Yes, the Malpensa Express arrives at Milano Centrale on tracks (Binari) 1 or 2. Those are offset slightly from most of the tracks, so you'll have to walk in to the main hall to find your next train. As the others have mentioned, I've also found that track changes are common in Italy, so you'll need to check the electronic board in the main track area to find your next train. Sometimes the tracks aren't assigned until about 30 minutes before departure. If in doubt, ask an official.
