Changing seats on Italo after purchase ?

I think it depends on the type of ticket.

Cheapest ones, no changes.

You may find someone willing to trade seats if you ask politely.

I do not think you can. I never found a way to do it. Just take your seats and ask to trade. People are pretty accommodating.

It is possible that other seats around you are already taken and the computer did its little best to seat you reasonably close to each other.

Is it a very long trip?

....it looks like there's very limited seating for more than 2 people "together". There are two rows that face each other over a table but, well, it's limited. If those seats are already taken, you'd have to ask 4 people to move and I sure wouldn't do that. My guess is that your trip isn't an especially long one so it won't be a big deal for 2 of you to be separated by just the aisle.
