Italy blocks big cruise ships from sailing past Venice's St. Marks, studies alternate route
Published August 08, 2014 - Associated Press

ROME – Italy has moved ahead with plans to block big cruise ships from sailing past Venice's historic center, authorizing an environmental study for an alternate route that it hopes will still satisfy the city's key tourism industry.

Cruise ships currently can pass within 300 meters (1,000 feet) of Venice's iconic St. Mark's Square, granting a stunning view to those aboard but presenting a jarring sight against the backdrop of Venice's Byzantine architecture.

Residents, activists and environmentalists have long opposed cruise ship traffic in Venice. They balked at the decision Friday by a commission of government ministers and local officials authorizing a study into using the Contorta-Sant'Angelo canal.

The group "No Big Ships" called it the worst choice and insisted that big cruise ships must be kept out of the lagoon altogether.

It is a jarring sight - I have a photo from one of our trips there where we were standing in St Marks Sq and one of those behemoths was going by - it dwarfed everything - I can only imagine the damage these ships are doing to this already fragile city...

Put me on the "No Big Ships" membership list when it comes to the Venice lagoon.
You can cruise everywhere else, but please, not there.
The Venice City Planners showed shrewd foresight, centuries ago, when they made the canals too narrow for cruise ships.
Now if we can just get the Big Ships out of the lagoon.

It's not just visually jarring; the wakes caused by these ships is contributing to the eating-away of the bridges, walkways and buildings on that edge of the city. They never should have been allowed in and shouldn't be let near any part of Venice or the islands. It's completely unnecessary - the passengers should take tenders or water taxis into town from outside the lagoon.

That did make me laugh Roberto, although now I feel guilty given that some folks lost their lives due to that accident.
If real damage is being inflicted, then the port of call needs to be moved regardless of how inconvenient it may be. I saw an NPR story from last year that noted 6,000 dock jobs exist because of the cruise ship traffic. However, those jobs can still be maintained with a move of the docks, and maybe more because now the cruisers need a way to get to Venice.
I recently had my coworker describe how wonderful it was to be sipping prosecco on the deck of her cruise ship as it sailed past St. Mark's Square on their way out of Venice. Then I thought about how I was probably sipping something or another on St. Mark's Square at about the same time as her last June and how I got a couple of more days and nights out of Venice by staying on the island. Whose to say who had the better experience! I guess we both got what we were looking to get out of it, but maybe I didn't damage the ecosystem?!

My favorite is the eye rolling of the principle violinist of I Virtuosi Italiani during a quiet passage of a Bach concerto as the cruise liner sounded its horn outside the Chiesa di Pieta.

They don't need to move the cruise terminal. They just need to reroute the ships around the Giudecca so that they don't have to pass in the Giudecca Canal and the San Marco basin. Big merchant ships and probably oil tankers go to Porto Marghera, yet they don't pass on the Giudecca canal.

What's next? Not letting buses past the Piazzalr Roma and making us WALK?

I'm sure we'd all like to see the big ships kept as far away as possible.
