Cernobbia to Zermatt

We are staying in Cernobbia for a wedding and will be touring lake Como from Thursday until Monday. We do not have to be back to Milan for our flight home until Saturday so we have Monday - Saturday to kill. My husband would like to see the Matterhorn and spend 3 days in Zermatt. Any suggestions on where we should go between Cernobbia and Zermatt? We wanted to take the Glacier Express but not from St Moritz.
Also what is the fastest and easiest way to get from Zermatt to Milan?

What do you want to see and do?

Easiest and fastest reasonable way is by train. But it's not a fast trip, there are a lot of mountains in the way.

When is the wedding? There is rail construction at several locations in the near term.

Fastest way is to take a taxi to Chiasso, Switzerland, a short distance away. Then train to Locarno, then the Centovalli railway to Domodossola (which is quite scenic). Then a train to Brig or Visp, followed by a train to Zermatt. If you transfer at Brig, the train to Zermatt is outside the station in the street. This way is about 5 1/2 hours.

If you want to take the Glacier Express, again taxi to Chiasso, then train to Bellinzona, then train to Goeschinen, then train to Andermatt. You can get the Glacier Express to Zermatt from there if the timing is right. Remember, you have to buy a seat reservation to ride the actual Glacier Express trains. Otherwise, you can take a local train to Visp and train to Zermatt from there with no reservation fee. Same route, same scenery. Takes 6 to 6 1/2 hours. the Glacier Express schedule is seasonal, so time of year is important.

Return to Milan, Zermatt to Visp, then EC train direct to Milan. For the next 2 weeks, the route is interrupted by construction and you will have take a train replacement bus around the construction.
