central stay in Tuscany area?

Since we have a car for Tuscany area, is it better to stay in one location and travel to towns on day trips or is it better to move every day or so? We are considering Volterra for a central stay?

It depends on how many days total you have, if you have 5 or more, I'd spend a few in one area and a few in another area.

Gary - I would strongly suggest -
http://www.casolarelibbiano.it/ A beautiful property , just outside of San Gimignano and very close to Siena and Volterra. Berta and her Husband Andrea do a great job as hosts with the food , etc. and , as you can see by looking at their website, the property isd fabulous.

I would definitely recommend staying in one place as a base and doing day trips. It's really nice to come back to the same place at night after a busy day and it saves you all the time spent packing and repacking. I can recommend a place just out of Certaldo, near Volterra and San Gimignano, called La Fonte (la-fonte.com). It has 4 different apartments to choose from, a pool, off road parking and is very conveniently located. You will love the Tuscany area!

On my visits I always stay in either Assisi to see east Tuscany or Umbria areas or Siena to see central Tuscany and venture out by car or public bus if in Siena. Works great!!!

Stay in one spot. It's much niceer to have "home" at the end of a long day of exploring!

Gary,
We stayed in Florence for 10 days and found it the perfect place to unpack. There is so much there to see when you are not in the car visiting other destinations.

Try Pistoia. It is about 15 miles NW of Florence and on the main train route to the Pisa / Lucca / CT area.

We are going next month, spending 6 days in Tuscany with a rental car and staying in Castellina in Chianti..seems pretty centralized for trips to Florence, Siena, Pisa and the coast
