Central Location In Venice

Hi everyone, We are a family of five with three children, ages 12, 9 & 7, traveling to Venice in July, 2013. Can someone recommend a section for us to stay in that is central to everything? I'm trying to avoid spendng a ton of money on vaporetto rides. San Polo, San Marco, Dorsoduro?

All three of those are central, but then Venice is very compact. Consider staying at Pensione Guerrato. We've stayed there twice and loved it. It's just to the west of the Rialto Bridge, in a very central location, as you'll be able to see from Google Maps or from their website.

We just stayed at a great little B&B on the canal directly behind St. Mark's Basillica. I found it in the RS book and was so impressed. We traveled with two children, but he said he can accommodate 5 in a room (One big bed and three roll a away). Ricardo was a fantastic host, the place was basic, but super clean and the location was awesome. The rates were very reasonable (for Venice), I think we paid 170 Euros/night. Check it out and tell Ricardo I sent you:) http://www.cortecampana.com/?lang=en&act=home.

As Michael stated, check out Pensione Guerrato. Unless I'm mistaken they have some apartments near the hotel that might be better for a family if you plan to stay an extended period of time. TC

Hi there - We are also travelling to Venice with kids in July 2013 (ages 15 and 11)! Go to Tripadvisor and look at the reviews for family hotels and B and Bs. Very helpful. We are staying near the Rialto bridge. Great location and seems like there are quite a few reasonably priced places to stay there. Have you ever rented an apartment on a trip? We do that a lot if we are staying 3 or more nights and have had great experiences - much more room, can keep food in room for snacks, breakfasts. Venice has some good deals on apartments - look at TripAdvisor or Homelidays. We stayed at a gorgeous place in Rome through Homelidays for $125 Euros a night!

For saving money on vaporetto rides, your best bet is getting vaporetto passes for the duration of your stay. Others disagree, saying they walked almost everywhere and rarely took a vaporetto. But I found that I both walked a lot and rode vaporetti a lot. At 7 euros per single ride without a pass, it's hard for a vaporetto pass not to pay off. Especially with a large group, at least one person will be tired at some point, so you'll find yourselves riding a vaporetto on a "short" and "walkable" route. Then there's the longer routes, or going to outer islands where it's the only choice (San Michele, Murano, etc.)
