We are traveling to Italy in September and want to take a Viatour food tour that starts in Bologna. They will pick up at "central hotel" without defining or recommending "central". Does anyone have
good central hotel at a reasonable price? Would find $200 USD reasonable and can't find anything
I stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel in May 2012 - very centrally located. I paid 136 euro for a double room including breakfast.

I would stay there again. I was picked up there by a tour company (not Viatour).
We are staying here and taking a Food tour, the company just confirmed we are good at this location, they will pick us up at 7AM from the hotel:
Our tour is through ItalianDays, 150E per person for a full day with lunch and wine
Hotel San donato at via Zamboni 16 is centrally located and under 200 USD.
We enjoyed the Aemilia Hotel, just a block from one of the city gates. Modern and comfortable rooms, good variety for breakfast with eggs cooked to order, and a wonderful roof garden. Quiet location, parking available and we would stay there again.
Sharon, note that Viatour is a broker that sells other people's tours. If anything goes astray, they wash their hands. You can look up past comments on this website from people dealing with Viatour blunders. Try to book directly with the people running the tour for the best service and up-to-date information.
There are many hotels inside Bologna's central ring road. http://www.zanhotel.it/ is within two blocks of the train station.
A few years ago I stayed at the Albergo Centrale - right is the middle of the old town area of Bologna
and it was no more that 2 or 3 blocks to walk to the cathedral, Tourist Info, small shops, the main square, the library, etc.
I thought it was perfect.
I stayed at the Hotel Touring in Via de Mattuiani which is just a few minutes' walk from the main square. Nice friendly hotel with a roof terrace and good breakfasts. I'm not sure what the prices will be like in September, but they offer very good rates in the summer. Bologna hosts a lot of conventions, so there will be certain times of the year when hotels are very expensive.
We stayed at the hotel, Zanhotel Tre Vecchi, that Laura mentioned above. It's a nice hotel with excellent breakfast. Expedia shows it at $123 for a date I picked in Sept.
