Cemetarys

One of my favorite things to do where ever I go is to visit cemetarys. Italy certainly wins the prize for wonderful sculpture. They are usually well tended, planted beautifully, and the sculpture is outstanding. Any Favorite cemetarys not to miss?

Probably the most spectacular we saw was the "Porte Sante" behind the church of San Miniato al Monte in Florence. We also saw the English Cemetary in Florence. Be sure to check ahead of time or call because they have various opening times.

Isola San Michele is Venice's cemetary. You can take a water-bus to it and wander around. Except for the wealthiest people, they have to dig up the graves after about twelve years to make room for new burials. If you want an efficient way to see the resting places of famous dead people, remember that many are interred in churches. Santa Croce in Florence, quite apart from its architecture, is amazing because of the tombs you'll see. Galileo and Macchiavelli among them.

Me too, I have a series of books called Permanent Londoners, New Yorkers, Californians and Parisians. For about the past 20 years I have visited many cemeteries in these cities. I'm not sure if there was one on Italians but I'm going to check. I look forward to going to San Michele Island in Venice when I am there this spring. I have seen pictures of Cimitero Monumentale, Milan it looks wonderful and makes me want to go to Milan if only for that ok, and the last supper.
