Cell phone usage Italy IPhone

so, my husband and I have IPhone 4s and are on the Sprint network. We will likely need to make a few calls within Italy as well as make 1-2 calls back home to the U.S. What do you recommend? And please let me know specifics on how to turn off certain things (like data) on the phone. Thanks so much!

Nikki, Your best bet is to contact Sprint for information on International Roaming and costs. They may have to "enable" your phones before they'll operate on GSM networks. It's likely that your phones will be "locked" so you'll only be able to operate on a Sprint roaming plan, at whatever rates they charge. They may offer "travel packs" (which may include data) as AT&T and others do. You may find it helpful to have a look at This Article on the subject. You'll need to be VERY careful with cellular data. You can switch that off but still leave the voice, text and Wi-Fi portions active. I'm assuming the Sprint iPhone version is the same as others, so here's some info: > During the flight, either turn the phones "Off" or go to "Settings" and turn Airplane mode "On". Airplane mode will block ALL transceiver functions, but still allow you to listen to music or watch videos. > When you arrive in Europe, go to "Settings > General > Network" and then switch "Off" both Cellular Data and Data Roaming. I believe that's the correct procedure, so hopefully someone else can confirm that. You might also make note of the numbers on the Usage Meter, so that you can monitor whether you're actually using any data. Happy travels!
