Does anyone know what kind of roaming charges apply to AT&T cell phones in Italy or France? Thank you
I don't know exactly but it is a lot. Last time I went overseas, I used the passport plan for $120. They have another plan that is $10/day for days that you use data.
That depends on the cell phone plan you have with AT&T. Reach out to AT&T to find out what plan you have & the roaming charges for all countries to which you are traveling.
Before you commit to an ATT plan, read the Phones & Tech section under Travel Tips on this site. I’m an ATT customer but I’m in Italy now for 3 weeks and am using the TIM for Tourists SIM card for €30. If you visit Italy first, get the card there and it’ll also work in France.
If you bought the phones from AT&T, they are probably locked. They can't be used with a foreign SIM card unless you get them unlocked (which means getting unlock codes from AT&T). If the phones have been paid off, AT&T should unlock them for free for you.
You can use the phones on WiFi for free locked or otherwise. If AT&T supports WiFi calling on your phones, you can even use them to make free calls home on WiFi. Otherwise, put the phones in airplane mode the enable WiFi to keep data off. Texting may not work with data off, either. Try free apps like WhatsApp for free texting and calling. Try Google Hangouts to make free calls home to the US, even to landlines.
ATT has an international plan that is 10 bucks per day when you use your phone in a foreign country. You carry your data limits with you, so no special plan is applied while you are traveling. I think you need to be on an unlimited data plan to sign up for this service. Just turn off airplane mode when you need to use your phone and they will charge the 10 bucks for that day. Make sure to download any maps and audio tours before you go on your trip and you can save money.
I don't remember the exact costs, but it's fairly ridiculous if you don't add the "Passport" feature to your plan.
I had to make and take a couple of work calls from the US when I was last in Italy. The charges added up Quickly!! Luckily, my employer agreed to reimburse me for the calls.
I made a call from FL last week to make reservations at the Borghese. That 4 minute phone call resulted in a $12.00 charge on my latest phone bill.
I've now added the $60 Passport plan to my phone for an upcoming trip. Texts are unlimited (I think) and you get 1 or 2 GB of data, and international calls are about $0.35 per minute under the plan.
Check the AT&T site for specifics, as my recollection may not be exact.
