We have 3 full days after our RS Sicily tour. Since we end in Catania we originally thought Ragusa area. Now I am wondering if we’d enjoy Cefalu more. The dates will be Dec. 6-8 this year. Advice?
We went to both. I would stay in Ragusa over Cefalu, although we enjoyed both. Ragusa I thought was more interesting and you can easily go to Modica for that famous chocolate. Now we were there in May not December but Cefalu was far more crowded than Ragusa.
Cefalu if you mainly want to relax. There is a historical area as well as the beach and tourist areas.
Another vote for Ragusa. We enjoyed our stay there, including a day trip to Scicli and Modica. Cefalu was the only place in Sicily that, in hindsight, we would skip. We found it extremely overcrowded, very touristy and generally unwelcoming.
Cefalu’ and Ragusa are both wonderful spots but I would recommend Ragusa for two main reasons: 1) Closer to where your tour is ending 2) Cefalu’ is great during beach season.
I do not know where the RS tour goes, but I would also consider Siracusa and choose that over Ragusa if you’re not already going there.
If you do go to Ragusa, and you like chocolate, eat as much chocolate bread as you can.
Also, Noto, Modica and Scicli are nice visiting options from Ragusa. Assuming you are already visiting Villa Romana with RS tour.
I would go with Ragusa Ibla especially since you are going in December. Perhaps if you were visiting in the summer Cefalu would make more sense. I have visited both towns in the month of May and still preferred Ragusa Ibla. If you choose Ragusa make sure to check out "Rosso Cinabro: the workshop of the Sicilian Cart". Google it to learn more. Also, the suggestion of combining it with Modica is also a good one as the 2 towns are not far apart.
This being December is the deciding factor for me. I imagine Cefalu (and Ragusa for that matter) being dead this time of year, but especially Cefalu. I would not trek all the way back to stay there. I loved Cefalu but if you’re not enjoying the beaches or relaxing at an outdoor/seaside cafe then there’s not much else to do. It’s a resort town out if season. With Ragusa you could at least explore the towns a bit. I would suggest having a car for this.
