We are using points to stay at the Cavalieri Hilton for three nights in August and then plan on renting a car and driving out of Rome to Tuscany. Has anyone driven from the Cavalier Hilton to Tuscany? If so, how was it? I'm a bit hesitant but my husband is all for it. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
No we haven,t driven in Italy before but my husband is from Switzerland so he has driven there a great deal. The hotels address is Via Cadlolo 101. Thanks for any help.
Trust your husband on this. Driving in any big city is difficult, but once out of the city, you will find the drive to Tuscany delightful.
Sounds like your husband is the man with the plan. Suggest to him that sometime before the trip, he might want to go to www.viamichelin.com, the Mapquest of Europe, and use the trip planning tools there to plan a driving route beginning at the Hilton address you just gave and ending at the first desired destination in Tuscany. Then print out those directions and bring with you. You could also mention to him that if he gets a GPS, he'll be glad he did.
Susan - see my comments on the Rome Cavalieri Hitlon dated 04/19/08 at 7:13 AM - Great Hotel!
I have driven to and from the Hilton Cavaliri a few times. You can rent from AVIS right there in the hotel - that was our drop off point on one trip!
Once you get out of town it's an easy drive to Tuscany. The challenging part is getting out of Rome! Map your route out in advance, avoid rush hour travel, and you'll have no problem. Another option is to take a taxi to another rental location and drive from there...
Once out on the A-1 Autostrada just pick where you want to get off and head WEST into Tuscany. Driving in Tuscany is EASY and FUN!! I recommend SS222, one of the most scenic roads in Italy!
And since you're headed north and on A-1 you could always work the Prada Outlet into your plans! It's called Lo Spaccio and located in the town of Montevarchi, just off A-1!
If you need more help from the Hilton drop me a message.
Ciao,
Ron
Thank you to everyone for your advice. I guess my husband will get to drive from the Cavalieri Hilton to Tuscany. I really appreciate your feed back, it's really helpful. Thanks again.
Check around on the prices on the rental cars before you make your decision. The last couple of times we were in Rome (staying at the Cavalieri Hilton) we found it much cheaper (almost 1/2 the price even factoring in the train tickets) to take the train out of Rome and pick up a car elsewhere.
