Does anybody know anything about Cavalese. My dad some time there at the end of WWII, and I was thinking of checking it out when in Northern Italy in early June . . .

It is a nice village, the main one of the Fiemme valley. While being in the hearth of Dolomites, it is a bit low in elevation, so it has less dramatic landscapes than the Fassa or Gardena valleys - its mountains are mainly forested. Cavalese is not served by train lines so you should better rent a car (driving is easy) or you have to reach it by bus. The most frequent service is SAD hourly service to Ora station on the train line between Trento and Bolzano.
