Helen,

In my experience so far, the metered Taxis at Termini have provided good service. On my trip last April, I took a Taxi from Termini to the Trastevere area and the driver wasn't wasting any time (especially as he was using a GPS to find the address I gave him).

I had some "issues" with an unmetered Taxi that I attempted to use one day near St. Peter's. The first driver quoted €15 for the trip (as I recall, I was going to the Piazza Navona area) and I told him it was too expensive and started to walk away. A second driver yelled at me and said he'd do the trip for €10. Given the state of my feet at the time, I gladly accepted that offer!

Happy travels!

Most taxi drivers are honest but there are some that will rip you off & have meters that suddenly jump in price. I save yourself the hassle and book a car in advance with www.RomeCabs.com or another service. You'll know exactly how much the transfer will cost in advance.

Taxis in Rome are fine, provided you use a taxi that is authorized by the city of Rome, and not some guy hanging around outside Termini to see if you want a ride (of which there are quite a few.) Official taxis have the SPQR shield on the license plate and are covered in codes and the phone number to call. Head towards the taxi line outside of Termini and you shouldn't have any problems. I've taken hundreds of cabs in Rome and have never been ripped off, the only time I was ever ripped off in a cab was in New York City, so go figure!

Helen, First time we went to Rome we were talking out of Termini when a nicely dressed man asked my husband if we needed a taxi. He said yes and was told "come this way" my husband started to follow and as we walked up to this car, I asked if he was a metered taxi and how much to thehotel.Hereplied "No, private car for you" & gave me a price. I told my husband No and started walking off so he followed. I had read here about the taxi scams & found the official taxi stand. The price was cheaper & this graffiti wall saved us money.Don't be affraid of taxi, just make sure they are metered. Have fun!
