catania to malta

I hoped to travel to Malta at the end of the RS Sicily tour next April and wondered what was the best or easiest way to get there. Has anyone taken the ferry? If you've flown, which airline did you use? Any other tips or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Poppi

I considered going to Malta in 2015 but didn't get there. At that time, the ferry from the south coast of Sicily was very expensive for the length of the trip. That may well have changed In the last 10 years, but I'd check the ferry fare to be sure it's not a great deal higher than the airfare.

Flying is faster, cheaper and easier.

To take a ferry, you’ll need to take a bus to the ferry port in Pozzallo, then the ferry (about 2 hours). And the ferry is subject to cancellation in bad weather.

Our flight was under an hour and very inexpensive. Any airline is fine.

Hi Poppi,
I’ve done that connection before! The easiest option is definitely to fly—several low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Air Malta run direct flights from Catania or Palermo to Malta, and it’s only about an hour in the air. The ferry is possible too, but it runs from Pozzallo (about 1.5–2 hrs south of Catania by bus), so it adds some extra travel time. The fast ferry takes roughly 1 hr 45 min and can be a fun option if you don’t mind the transfer.

If you’re short on time, I’d go with a flight. If you want the experience of arriving by sea and don’t mind a longer journey, the ferry is a nice alternative.
