We will fly into Catania, and from the airport, (in mid April,) we need to get to Syracuse. I think our options are train, bus, or taxi/private driver.
Wonder what recommendations you all would suggest??

The direct bus is handy, leaves from just outside the terminal.
The train also works, but the airport station is not at the airport. You need to buy a ticket for the shuttle, or walk 10 minutes to the station listed as the airport.
Can' speak to a taxi or driver, it would take you closer to your destination as opposed to the Train/Bus station in Syracuse, but obviously more expensive. The drive is 40 to 60 minutes, so you are talking a couple hours of someone's time.
