Does anyone recommend a tour company for the catacombs and Why?
Our catacomb visit was led by a person who worked there and he was very informative. I can't think why you would go with a "tour compnay" other than they would provide transportation there and back. However, public transportation goes right to the catacombs so it certainly would not be necessary.

Where do you book for the catacombs
David,my wife says San Callisto is the one to go to.Why a tour?Just look it up and go there!Dennis
We went to the San Sebastiano catacombs and really enjoyed it. A half hour guided tour (in English!) is included in the entry fee and the bus stops right in front. Afterwards it's a short walk up the appian way to catch the bus back again - you can buy your bus ticket at the catacomb ticket office.
David- no need to reserve. Just show up, pay your entrance fee (very reasonable) and they will put you on a tour. We really enjoyed it.
thanks everyone
How long does it take to get there and back and tour the catacombs on average from central Rome? We aren't sure if we will have time, but would love to go if we can.
