CATACOMBS OF ST.CALLIXTUS in Rome - Questions

How do I get to the catacombs from Colosseum area ? I see on their website they offer free guides and you cannot visit the site without a guided tour.
Going to be there in last week of July so wondering if this is a good option for the hot afternoons with teenagers ? How are the crowds in here ?

Lots of info on the website:

How to get there:

Visiting the catacombs is not free but a guide (mandatory) is included in the ticket price:

Visiting hours: 9.00 - 12.00 and 14.00 - 17.00
Closed Wednesdays

As with all religious sites in Rome (and most elsewhere in Italy), modest dress is requested.
Yes, it will be cool in the catacombs but tours do not take all that long (30/40 minutes).

One thing to know is that the line builds up during the two hour afternoon break, meaning there are scads of people waiting to go in at 2 pm.

Not a great idea, IMO. I took the bus from Circo Massimo. You may have to wait for a bus, then an uncomfortable 10-15 minute ride. Then wait in line in the heat to buy tickets. I was lucky, went in February, got there just before 2 pm tour and got a ticket.

If you are in Rome on Saturday, July 29, you can still get tickets for Nero's House (Domus Aurea) at 13.45 (only 4 tickets left) or 16.45. It's definitely chilly inside, and only a few meters from the Colosseum. Well worth the time. It's only open on weekends and Sunday looks to be sold out.
