Catacombs

Rome has plenty of catacombs to choose from so I need your help! Does anyone have favorite catacombs or one that as a first time visitor they would recommend visiting above the others if you may only have time to see one?

Our first visit to Rome we took the bus out to Appia Antica and visited the catacombs of San Callisto. Now, I don't have any others that I remember to compare them to, but it was quite interesting. If you want to go, just check the times - when we went, I believe we arrived about 10 min after they started their lunch break, which may have been an hour (we just wandered along the old road...and this was 2008, so my memory could be a little fuzzy...)

Edit...(Just checked the hours and they are closed between noon and 2pm - I think we arrived about 12:30 or so, so had to cool our heels for a bit).

The Catacombs of Priscilla are my favorites: in the northern part of Roma, you can get there by local bus. They are not large, so easy to fit into your day.

Thank you very much for your help! Both the ones where I can see Appia Antica and Priscilla sound amazing based on my reading on these forums but Priscilla might be a little easier schedule wise. Who knows though?

If you are going to the Appian Way, do so on a Sunday when the vehicular traffic is restricted.

Except that San Sebastiano (which we did ) isn't open on Sunday:

S. Callixtus (Callisto) is open, though, so you could do that one:

We did the Appia on a Friday as it was forecast to be the best weather day during our visit, and we didn't find traffic to be a big issue. Just the usual bit of dodging one does in Rome. :O)
