My husband, 12 year old, and I will be staying in Manarola in March. Can you recommend some casual, family restaurants in Manarola or other Cinque terre towns for hungry hikers? Also, is there a food market in Manrola?
There is a hole-in-the-wall place that sells pizza and paninis with the best pesto pizza I have ever had in my entire life! I'd spend the money and time to fly back to Italy and take the train to that place just to have a slice of that pizza and do nothing else while I'm across the pond.
I don't remember the name of the place, but I remember that the chef took donations to feed the "stray" cats. It's right on the main drag of one of the towns as it starts to go away from the harbor. It was either Vernazza, Maranola or Riomaggiore. If I were to bet, I would say it is in Maranola. It's the town where everyone parks their boats on the streets near the harbor in the winter.
During our stay in Riomaggiore, we would get take out food from a pizza place and a pasta place close to Bar Centrale and go down to the rocky point at the harbor and watch the sun go down. Hopefully you would have decent weather for that in March.
All of the restaurants in the CT are casual and all of the towns have little pizza places. There is a market in Manarola but it has the usual rural Italian hours so don't count on it being open between noon and 3:00
