castelrotto october festival

has anyone been to castelrotto just before the mid-october festival, kastleruther spatzen? we have reservations to stay october 9 and 10, departing on the 11th. the festival begins october 11. i'm worried that the small town charm that we're seeking will be lost to the 40,000 concert goers who will descend for the festival. am i overreacting? we're thinking about staying in val gardena instead. is that far enough away for us to have a peaceful visit to the dolomites? would love some recommendations for where to stay.

Hi Karen, In 2003 we stayed in the Val Gardena during this festival. Didn't affect our stay at all. I know that doesn't help with your concern about Castelrotto, but since you'll be leaving before it starts, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're thinking about staying in the Val Gardena instead, I would certainly consider doing that. Castelrotto is on the edge of the Dolomites, not among them anyway. If you want a peaceful and really spectacular area and place to stay, look into the Alta Badia. The Val Gardena and the Alta Badia are seperated (or joined) by the incredible Gardena Pass, our favorite drive in the Dolomites. We stayed once (10/03) at the Garni Ariston in St. Christina (Val Gardena) and twice (10/06, end of Sept. '09) in La Villa (Alta Badia) at the Ciasa Montanara. While we liked both places to stay, the Ciasa Montanara was hands down our favorite. The Dolomite scenery in the Alta Badia is superior IMO, the Monatanara is beautiful (and reasonable) and with a car, the Dolomite Passes are a great way to get up close to the amazing Dolomite peaks and even for walks among them. I know of 2 cable cars that run into late October... the Mont Seuc/Seiser Alm in Ortisei (Val Gardena) and the Lagazoui cable car near the Falzarego Pass, less than 30 min. from La Villa.
