Thinking of going to Castelrotto May 12-15, and want to go to Alpe di Suisi. I understand the ski lifts won't be open yet, Is it still worthwhile going? I am not a serious hiker, more of a walker. Mainly want to be able to enjoy the scenery, or is it too muddy from melting snow?
If the mud seems impassible, I think you could walk on the road or enjoy views from your hotel and other stops served by bus. While there may not be ideal hiking conditions, our tours start visiting a month before your planned dates.
We were there one year in mid to late May. We lucked out with the weather. There are paths for different abilities. I had a foot problem at the time so going down steep inclines was out. I
still managed to go on a long walk to take in the scenery. I agree if it is muddy you will still soak in the beauty of the area by walking on the road.
We were there in May several years ago and while the lifts were not open, we were able to go on a "walking hike" along a paved and semi paved road for quite a way. It wasn't too muddy but we did get caught in a brief combination hail and snow storm that just added to the walk without being really serious weather. Even if you go off road and get into mud, the scenery is absolutely worth it. Enjoy!
Even with lifts not yet open, you can take buses to several good walks. We prefer to stay up in the Val Gardena, though, as it is more "in" the mountains. Stop by the TI in Castelrotto or wherever you choose to stay. They'll have ideas and directions for you.
Thanks everyone!
