Castelrotto

We are staying at the Cavallino D'Oro June 29th - July 3rd. This is our first trip to the Dolomites. From exploring websites and Rick's travel guides there is lots to see and do. My husband and I are in our 60's and in excellent health. We are looking for itinerary planning suggestions for hiking and taking in the scenery to make the most out of our 4 day stay.

I've stayed at the Cavalino several times - it is a wonderful hotel run by some very nice people. You are right above the main bus station so getting to Alpe di Suisse will be easy. Wonderful, full day of walking and views. You are also very near the chair lift that will take you up to a good place for lunch and great walking trails.

I posted this same reply a few days ago on another thread.

I was on the RS My way alpine tour last June, and we stayed in Castelrotto at the Hotel Cavallino D'Oro as well, arriving around 4pm. We did the RS Calvario Stroll above town circling around the mountain. Tons of amazing vantage point views over town with the Dolomites in the background. Others in our group took the last chairlift up the mountain and walked down. Then we headed out of town towards the mountains and did the walk to St.Valentin church. It was about 1.5hr round trip walking thru fields, meadows and the last part was right thru a farm yard. We had amazing late afternoon weather and the pictures of the historic church with the towering Dolomites behind was shear beauty. It was near sunset by the time we made it back and we stopped off for a great dinner at Liftstuberl (about 15 min walk up the hill from the hotel). We actually enjoyed this restaurant so much we returned the next night too!

For our full day in the Dolomites we made our way up to the Alpe di Siusi for a couple different day hikes. Unfortunately the weather turned on us this day, so our views weren’t as great as what we were hoping. But just an excuse to return again in the future! Here’s my notes of what we did:

bus #3/3A/172 to Seis/Siusi cable car (free)
Seiser Alm Bahn gondola from Seis/Siusi to Compatsch (20E RT, 8am-6pm)
Hans and Paula Steger Trail #30, Compatsch to Saltria (~1.5hr one way). Return to compatsch via shuttle bus #11 (2.50E)
Trail of the Witches. Telemix Puflatsch lift from Compatsch to Puflatsch (7E 1-way). Puflatsch loop counterclockwise (~3hr). Downhill back to Compatsch
Return via gondola and bus #3/3A/172 back to castelrotto (free)
An amazing dinner at Liftstuberl again!
