The two places we have been told to visit are Siena and SG. We have a guy who is helping us plan our trip and he said to stay in Castellina (we have 3 nights) (of course he has a hotel in Castellina) :) We will have a car. It's 1.5 hour drive from Castellina to Siena and then another (approx) 45 to SG. Doesn't it just make more sense to stay in Siena or SG? We are 60 and 65. We like "people, activity" and Castellina seems a bit too quiet ?? Approximately Sept. 21 thanks for your help/suggestions. Dianne
Actually, with a rental car, you can stay at one of dozens or really great agriturismos in the Siena, San G. area. They usually have parking for your car. My wife and daughter are staying at the Agriturismo Marciano in a few weeks. It's 3 miles from Siena. After you see the quantity of tourists in Siena and San G. you'll appreciate a bit of quiet as well as their nice restaurant.
thank you very much. dianne
When visiting in the area, we have always chosen to stay IN San Gimignano. It's a lovely town, especially in the evening after the tourists have left (or in the morning before they arrive). We like being able to walk around before and after dinner, and sit in the piazza with a glass of wine or a gelato. In the evenings, there's plenty of parking just outside the town walls. And during the day, we tend to be out and about visiting other places.
