Castellammare Del Golfo - Sicily

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Italy in May and would like to visit my grandfather's town (Castellammare Del Golfo). I won't be renting a car and will be travelling solo. Does anyone have experience getting to the town from Palermo or nearby cities? Is the city relatively safe to walk around?

Any tips are appreciated!

Yes, in our budget travel days, we took the train/bus combo from Palermo's airport to Castellammare del Golfo. Now, I would definitely spring for a taxi (about a half-hour ride from the airport). If going from Palermo itself, it's a longer ride and you might want to take the bus if concerned about expense. It looks like the bus takes about an hour and 40 minutes and there are several buses a day. I would consider the town completely safe - and we enjoyed it very much.

Thanks Janet. What train route did you take? From Palermo to Alcamo Marina? Google is showing a couple of ways that are all over the place.

Yes, from the airport (Punta Raisi) to Alcamo. Look at Rome2Rio.com instead of Google maps.

We drove around Sicily in 2007 - great island with tons of things to see - so can't assist you with train, etc travel. But, we did visit Castellammare Del Golfo. It is a beautiful little seaside town. 15 years ago, it seemed like it had been forgotten in time - quaint and lovely. Unless things have really changed, I would say it would be safe. Hope you speak some Italian - there is not a lot of English spoke in Sicily.
Happy travels

Certo! I can speak enough to get around, glad to hear I'll get some immersion. Thanks!

My wife's family is from Castellammare Del Golfo so we spent a few nights there in 2019. We loved it. We were looking for her Aunt's old house and a local woman saw us wandering and helped us find it. We were surprised how nice the town was, for some reason we didn't expect much. We drove there from Trapani so I can't help with public transportation. There is a nice main street with shops which was closed in the evenings for the passeggiata. We were told that the town has become popular for weddings and we saw a wedding while we were there. We felt totally safe day and night.
