castell'arquato

Hello

Based on the great recommendations in this forum we are looking at staying in Castell'Arquato our final night in Italy. We decided to do this to break up the drive from the Chianti region in Tuscany to MXP since we have young children and it appears to be a 5+ hour drive.

Going to Milan was the original plan but then we would have to drop our car off at the airport, take the train into Milan, only to have to take the train back the next day. Our flight isn't until 4 p.m. so we don't have to be at the airport until 1 p.m. I wanted to get a sense of the distance between Castell'Arquato and MXP as well as of the drive. Is it more or less a straight shot on the highway? We can avoid having to drive through Milan? And is it a good stop between Tuscany and MXP? We wanted something closer to MXP so that we don't have to be too nervous about getting to the airport the next day.
Thx.

Two other sugestions...Parma if you want to stay south of Milan or Ranco, north of Mial on the SE side of Lake Maggiore which is lovely and very close to MXP. What draws you to Castell'Arquato?

The point is to break up the drive between Tuscany and Milan. Hence, only makes sense to stay south of MXP somewhere on the way.
Someone on this forum mentioned Castell and on the map it looks relatively close to MXP and on the way from Tuscany to there so thought it may be a nice choice for a relaxing last night. Would Parma be a more direct route?

If no one has experience with the drive, you can always use Via Michelin or Google Maps directions to get a feel for travel time and routing. Looks like it's close to a 2 hour drive, mainly on express highways that include the ring road around Milan. Drive from Parma would be slightly longer but along the same express highways.

One more question. It dawned on me that we could just drop the car off at Milan's Linate airport the night before and then spend the night in Milan.

Is driving from Tuscany to Milan's Linate a straight shot? We can avoid Milan traffic? That way the train ride to Milan would be much shorter and we wouldn't have to do the one-hour MXP-to-Milan train ride two days in a row.

Dropping a car at Linate is easy. Transport from there to Milano Centrale train station is by www.airportbusexpress.it, 5 euros per person, 35 minutes, or you can take a taxi to the door of your Milan hotel for about 25 euros.
