We were there some years ago (maybe 10?). We had actually meant to stay in the national park just west of it, but all the B&Bs were full, so we ended up in a hotel on the waterfront. At that time it was definitely not touristywe had a hard time finding a restaurant. It had a gorgeous setting, with an esplanade stretching from the hotel to a waterfront, but the street facing it was used for bus garages! Anyplace else it would have been lined with outdoor cafes. There was even a ruined castle on the water, but it was closed. I read an article a few years later that didn't even sound like the same place. Anyway, it was very good for visiting Segesta, Erice, and Monreale for day trips. I hope it's good for you. We were driving, by the way.

When are you planning to go, how long will you be in the area, what type of accomodations do you prefer? I have spent a lot of time in this area which is a beautiful location. Let me know more and I will try to help

In 2007, we took the train from the Palermo airport to Castellammare del Golfo station, then a shuttle bus into town. We enjoyed the little low-key, safe town and its harbor. There's a museum in the old castle.

Thank you all for your reply's. I have to admit I have been a little nervous going there but, I cannot visit Italy without seeing where my father was born.
We were planning on going in September and staying 2 or 3 days.
