Castel Sant' Angelo questions

I'll be in Rome the end of September, and I'd like to visit Castel Sant' Angelo on a Sunday. So I have a few questions regarding tickets:

1) Are advance tickets necessary?

2) If so, what's the best on-line site to buy them? I understand some sites are re-sellers. I'm not sure if I should use them or the official site, and I'm having difficulty finding an official site.

3) One of the sites I found offered tickets in a variety of configurations: skip-the-line tickets; skip-the-line tickets with hosted entry; and skip-the-line tickets with hosted entry and audio guide. What is hosted entry? I don't believe it's a guide, since the third option is an audio guide.

Any advice on visiting Castel Sant' Angelo is appreciated.

This is the official ticketing vendor. They don't offer the option of a tour or audioguide on this site, and tickets are for specific days but are not timed entry so you'll just be skipping the ticket line for visitors who don't have them. That's probably good enough as it isn't considered a 1st-tier attraction like the Vatican Museums or Colosseum. During the week I'm not sure you really need to purchase advance tickets at all.

They do offer free tours but apparently only in Italian.
Chiilybean, in case you were thinking about lunch or a snack their cafeteria, it's going to be closed when you're there.

"We inform you that from Tuesday, September 10, 2024 for the next 3 months the rooms in which the Castel Sant'Angelo bar is housed will be affected by restoration and redevelopment work. In the period indicated, therefore, the cafeteria will be closed to the public, to return to offer its services as completely renovated starting next December."

We visited Castel Sant'Angelo last October. We bought tickets "at the door" and there was no line at the ticket window. I'm not sure if it will be different on a Sunday in September. It's too bad about the cafe being closed. There are some great views of Rome from the top of the Castel, especially of St. Peter's. After our visit, we strolled along the river, crossed at one of the bridges, and walked around Piazza del Popolo. Then we headed up the stairs to the Gardens of the Villa Borghese. There are some more great views of St. Peter's from there, as well.

Another question: is Castel Sant' Angelo one of those places where you have to have your shoulders and knees covered? (I'm more concerned about the knees than the shoulders.)

No, it's a national museum of the Italian State and not a church or otherwise operated by a religious institution.
