Castel Gandolfo - Train Station Far From Town?? Good day trip?

Considering visiting Castel Gandolfo on a short day trip from Rome in October. Is the train station far from the center of town? Is the town pretty easy to navigate and have some good local restaurants?

Are tours available of the Pope's summer home?

Thanks!

The train station is very close to town as the bird flies, but it is a winding hilly road so it is a bit of a climb. Castelgandolfo is a very small and quiet town, no tours of the papal residence that I am aware of.

Public transport is pretty bad around there, but there is a place to eat that is wonderful, very spartan but lakeside and with wonderful porchetta, mozzarella, bread, olives etc. It's called Da Agnese. Would be a short cab ride from the center to get there (it is also cheap to rent bicycles and several places on the lake provide them).

How steep is the climb? Concerned about my mother walking up it. Could a cab be taken from the train station to the center of town?

Just trying to decide if this would be a good idea to go here or to go to Anzio instead.

Italy has so many wonderful choices!!

Grazie mille!

It's pretty steep as I recall, but can't give you an incline really...It's nothing like the cinque terre for example but still a good hill. Would your mom make it on the hills of San Francisco?

There aren't many taxis in town, I don't think you'll find one easily at the train station, it's a tiny little station.

Still a nice day trip, but if your mom is very easily winded, you may want to reconsider.

Great, all things to keep in mind.

Counting the days until the trip!
