Cassino....Looking for advice.

Hello there.

I'm reaching out to see if anyone has information to share regarding time spent in Cassino. We are interested in visiting the history of this area. If you know of locations to stay (apartment or hotels), how many nights would be appropriate, sites to see, nearby hidden gems etc, etc. it would be most helpful and appreciated. Thank you in advance.

do you mean the town at the base or the WWII site of devastation at the top (my father was there before the attack)?

Yes Nigel, that is the location I am enquiring about. My father in law fought in the area but our details of his locations are sketchy.

My father was a British Commando and he and few others of them infiltrated the area significantly before the bombing and subsequent attacks, so he was gone before the real rough stuff happened.

When I went to look several years ago, I was really let down by the town, and of course nothing to see. I didn't go to the top of the hill, and pretty quickly was back on the Autostrada.

I would have liked to have more to share with you.

If you're asking about Monte Cassino area - the site of some serious fighting in WWII - I remember a thread a while ago about it which is probably worth searching up.

There are many battlefield tours but the building at the top if the hill is a monastery again so an organized visit is probably a good idea but I don't know if it is required.

The town itself is modern and without a deep history knowledge of the area I think a tour will be needed to add the context to make the visit worth taking the time and trouble to do.

Some examples of tours - not recommendations -

WWII has a way of popping up as you travel in Italy. If you take the bus from Florence to Siena the amazing fields of sunflowers are suddenly uninterrupted by the entrance to the America Cemetery before switching back to sunflower fields.

Have a great trip,

We made arrangements with My Day Trip for a stop at Montecassino. The drive up the mountain was beautiful. The Abbey was even more beautiful. I don't regret the visit, but we couldn't find any mention of World War 2 or the Allied Forces.
