I read that we should not bring much cash, and should use our ATM card for euros. Is this correct???
Thanks!
Sorry! I didn't read the post RIGHT before mine with the same question! Please disregard!
Correct, that's the standard advice given here. And I'd add that about half of travelers reporting here like to bring enough euros for the first day or two, at least enough to get to your first hotel--just for peace of mind. The other half show up with no euros in pocket and try to find an ATM machine at their arrival airport: your personal preference on that. Some good advice from Rick on money management in Europe is here: Europe Money 101
ATM cards work well. you'll get a better exchange rate and won't have to worry about carrying a was of US$. Some isuuers do charge fees for the foreign transcation so ask your bank and decide if you want to change the bank or adjust your withdrawals (one bigger one per day rather than smaller ones more frequently)
As always let your bank know when you will be overseas so they won't freeze the account for possile fraudulent use when the foreign access shows up. You may also want to check on what your daily withdrawal limit is and see about increasing it if it is a lower amount. With the euro so high against the dollar, you may need the extra room.
Bring a little cash in case of emergency but use your ATM card just as you would here in the States to get your Euros. Have fun!!!
Just got back from 3 wks in Murano, Florence and Rome. I brought $100 for incidentals while flying and/or unexpected needs while in US. I found a bancomat(ATM) at every airport and train stn., usually a BIG, BIG sign or I just asked someone. After, the long flight over I was a little tired and disoriented, so I saw some folks that appeared to be helping others and I waited my turn to ask for directions.
