Cash or credit cards in Florence taxis?

For an evening ride to/from Duomo and Boboli, single female traveling alone has asked me for info regarding taxis. Thank you.

Either works. But why doesn’t she walk?
Florence, especially the city center, is very safe with thousands of people walking around until very late at night. Does your friend have some mobility issues? The distance between the Duomo and Piazza Pitti is a 10min walk on flat terrain. Also the itinerary is on pedestrianized streets, therefore the taxi would need to take a longer loop that would take just as long as the walk.

For the occasional taxi in Italy we pay in cash. I think she will be pleasantly surprised to see that there’s a lot of people walking in the evening, so she might feel comfortable just walking between these locations.

As a single female traveler alone in Florence on multiple trips, I recommend walking. As the others have mentioned, evening passegiatas are the norm in Italy, and it's fun moseying around in the evenings along with the locals. Unless your friend is staying somewhere far out from the historic city center, there's no need for a taxi. Indeed, taking a taxi could be costly due to the congestion and frequent pauses/stops the driver makes to accommodate pedestrian traffic. Walking really is easiest.

To answer your question, the times I have taken a taxi in Florence (from train station to lodging across the Arno with baggage is a pain, thus worth the taxi), I paid with cash.

Hope this helps your friend!
