Cash on arrival for apartment rental in Rome!

In January I signed a contract to rent an apartment in Rome for one month starting in April. The contract states that rental payment is to be made in cash upon arrival. Having rented apartments in Europe 6 or 8 times before I assumed that payment by wire transfer to the rental agency bank or by credit card (with additional charge) would be accepted. The agent insists that payment be in Euros at the aparment. He will not accept traveler's checks and we arrive in Rome at 5:30pm so it is too late to cash travelers checks at a bank as they will be closed. I don't want to carry several thousand Euros with me for a week while we tour London before going to Rome. The agent does not want to work with his customer to find a resonable solution.

Has anyone had a similar experience? How did you solve the problem?

I've been asked to pay cash on arrival for a Rome apartment...of course I only stayed for 4 nights instead of a month. Actually, I would probably RATHER pay cash on arrival than to wire that much money ahead of time for a place that I had not seen and may not even exist.

If you want the apartment carry the Euros, if not, look elsewhere. You have the upper hand in this deal.

I have 3 debit cards with withdrawal limits that let me get enough cash from an ATM upon arrival to cover apartment rentals. I just stop on the way to the apartment or use an ATM at the train station or airport when I get there.
