Caserta and Herculaneum - lodging suggestions requested

I'd like to stay in a place that is near one and visit Caserta one day and Herculaneum the other. Any suggestions as to the best area to lodge in? and perhaps any specific hotel or agriturismo suggestions you may have.
Thanks so much

Naples makes sense to me, also a very significant city to visit. When making daytrips every day, an agriturismo is an impediment, not a romantic slice of Italian daily life. You want to walk to public transit. Any mobility problems?

Use the search box top left for "naples hotels", and apply the Newsboard and Two Years filters.

Naples has really fast rail options from Rome, cheaper with non-changeable advance purchase

I am not insisting, but do check out the three smaller excavations run by the Pompeii department. They are not very much "like" Pompeii or Herculaneum. There is a five-site, three-day ticket, I think. Note that you cannot re-enter any of these the same day. That's particularly important for Herculaneum, because it's a meaty (if smaller) site, but has no cafe inside it, which Pompeii does. Also note that Herculaneum is a 15-minute downhill walk from the Circumvesuviana "subway" stop.

Salerno is another option. Naples is closer to Caserta and Salerno is closer to Paestum so it's pretty much a wash. The only difference in trains is you will have to change in Naples on the way to Caserta and you probably wouldn't going Naples to Paestum.

But the bigger question is which city fits with what you want outside of these two places? Naples is much bigger and busier with serious sights to see and big city attractions while Salerno is a much smaller city with a very walkable core and seaside location.

Look into them and whichever feels more like the experience you're looking for book into that one. In either city I'd look to have easy access to the train station if day tripping is your main focus. In Salerno that would probably mean within walking distance but since that includes most of downtown that not an issue.

Check previous threads in the forum for recommendations for lodging in both cities.

Have a great trip,
