Caserta

We're thinking about staying in Caserta to use as a base for visiting Pompeii and Naples. Can anyone recommend hotels or have other info?

The royal palace was truly something in its day. Today, only a small part of it is open to the public, but even that is spectacular, and takes a 2-3 hours to see. If weather is nice get outside in the gardens. We only day-tripped there. My guess is that it is not as interesting as some other areas. Our friend who lives there says people in Naples are more friendly and cheerful. Caserta suffered much damage in war so there are many post-war buildings. The two restaurants far up on the hill overlooking the valley are ok, but it is a long drive up the winding road, (watch for wrong turns) and view is dependent on the weather. Trains are frequent.
