Is there any shower facility (paid one I guess) in Cascate del Mulini , Saturnia (NOT the Therme Spa one). I know there's a snack bar but the info of a paid shower facility is still vague. If there's any, how much is the cost?
I can’t tell you from experience because the last time I went many years ago there was absolutely nothing, not even the snack bar. It was a true “roughing it” experience.
I read that more recently, with the snack bar, there is also a shower at the snack bar in front of the the parking lot which is available for a fee when the bar is open. I don’t know if the shower is in the open or enclosed, but if you want to take a shower in the open without bathing suit nobody will care since in my experience there were often some clothless naturists at that site.
I don't recall showers. It doesn't mean there definitely aren't, but unless someone else has better info, don't count on them. The water wasn't as stinky as I've heard and I don't think I smelled of sulfur when leaving. Or maybe I did and people were too polite to make a face. :) Seemed like most people came in suits and maybe changed in the cars before leaving? I did the surfer thing and wrapped a towel around tightly to change underneath. FYI- The water is tepid rather than hot so keep that in mind if it's cool outside when you go.
I read a post in Italian where they said the showers weren’t functioning. I don’t know if that was a temporary situation or if that post described the current status or a past status. In any case I wouldn’t go there with the certain expectation there would be functioning showers.
I only soaked my feet (it was far too crowded to enjoy bathing), but the odor of the water immediately dissipated, so a shower is not a necessity if that was a concern.
I was there last fall but did not go into the snack bar to look around. (On the outside of the snack bar, however, we were fascinated with the self-service hot-pizza vending machine.)
We changed into swimsuits in the parking lot (normal for all the Germany, Swiss, and French visitors whose license plates we saw there), leaving clothes in the car, and later drove one hour back to our hotel on the coast (Porto Ercole) without changing and with towels on the car seats.
Agreed that the smell was not bad nor particularly sulphurous. Wear sunscreen. Water shoes are also a good idea. While the natural bottom of the pools would be soft, the number of people walking on them breaks them into pebbles. (Or, get down and crawl-float on your hands, so the water is holding your weight and the pebbles won't bother you.)
Hi All, thanks for the input.
I thought the house just at the top of the cascade is the snack bar? We'd go for dinner in Manciano before heading back to Orvieto. more worried with being sticky (w/ the sunscreen too) then smelly :) We'll go there in June around 5pm so i think tepid water would be great. In fact, i thought it's going to be too hot but i read the place is swarmed by tourists in summer so the water should be fine. i hope it won't be too crowded by 5pm but the day we'd go is a Saturday so I guess crowded or not, we'd prepare to enjoy it still. I do normally change in the car when going to the beach so that's actually what i plan to do. Well I think being in nature, one shouldn't think too much about showing their form a bit :D heard about the pebbles too so we'd bring flip flops but it might be hard to move with flip flops under water and hopefully it's not slippery.
I never did find out what the house at the top was, but the snack bar is before you go to the water. The water is a little slick, but not terrible, Walking on your hands is the easiest way to go until you have to climb over rocks to another level. Most people toss their shoes off before going into the water. Fortunately, used flip flops and old towels aren't a big target for thieves!
The building next to the Cascate Del Mulino used to be a water mill, now abandoned, which utilized the water to turn the millstones for grinding wheat and make flour.
Mill in Italian is....you guessed it..Mulino
