Caruggi in Genoa

I have been reading the the Caruggi of Genoa ( historical old streets/alleys, with shops and small restaurants) are family friendly. I have been trying to locate a good way to walk in that area along some kind of route but I am having trouble finding some direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The best approach? Allow yourself to wander without a rigid plan. I discovered my favorite little shops, cafes, and historical details when I wasn’t trying to get anywhere specific.

No personal experience, but after scanning a few such articles, it seems the 'wander through the maze' approach was a common theme.

You could start at Porta Soprana and try to find your way to find your way to one of my favorite restaurants, Sa Pesta, then find your way to Confetteria Romanengo Porto Antico Genova. Or if you like medieval church facades, you could find and mark those on a map and walk from one to another to another. I've done both of these things, but couldn't tell you exact routes. I like to be going somewhere, rather than doing pure wandering, even if I get lost for a little while.

Try to stick to the major streets at night, don’t venture into the darkest alleys. They are not the safest spots of Genoa. During the day it’s ok.

As Roberto indicates, when I was in Genoa I was warned by my b&b host and in guidebooks not to be in the Caruggi area after dark. Maybe it has become safer? In daylight it was fine and fascinating but really easy to get lost. GPS might not work well in the very narrow streets so you might want to download a map that you could use offline if you decide to just wander.
