So happy to read here that updated schedules are now available on Trenitalia.
I just looked at tickets for September 8, 2016, from Varenna-Esino to Monterosso departing at 1037, arriving 1505.....super economy and economy are sold out(???) but there is a cartafreccia special rate available. I read the details, and I am still not sure if I am eligible to purchase these tickets (US citizens)?
Check back in a week. Another reader mentioned the same issue, that the advance fares seem to be not yet loaded. I'm guessing that's a separate procedure. You can't buy the cartafreccia rate unless you have purchased a cartafreccia (discount card), which you're not going to do.

Regarding the Cartafreccia card, it's not really worth the effort to get one, as I believe a Codice Fiscale and a local address is required. Equal savings can be achieved by simply booking as early as possible and getting the Super Economy or Economy tickets.
