Carrying Luggage to Restaurants

Unfortunately during a couple of our travels in Italy we don't have too much time between finishing up our sightseeing and catching a train to our next destination. We certainly don't have time to store bags in the left luggage area at a train station. If we are really on the run, would it be difficult or impossible to carry our luggage to a restaurant? Is it an absolute no-no?

I would appreciate any advice and thank responders in advance.

Can your hotel hold your luggage after check out?- most do.
What will you do with luggage while sightseeing if you keep it with you after check out?
Are you talking about small carry ons or large suitcases?

It's not necessarily a no- no but I would look for a restaurant with roomy outdoor seating, a more casual place and then luggage at your table is not an issue.

Thanks for your prompt response Christine. No, we are not staying at hotels, but apartments/airbnb's.

Anything can be done to a obnoxious extreme but if we are talking about a bag or two, smile, be polite and humble and i suspect the restaurant will be happy to help you. Imangine doing it in the US. No difference.

Trying to help. A few logistical comments/questions:

1). How much luggage are we talking about?

2) Before or after checkout, are you planning to do sightseeing with luggage?

3) Generally speaking, as long as it’s not too much luggage, I imagine many restaurants will try to accommodate you. Some have small footprints and so that may limit your options. But you will likely find an option.

Just make sure it is a larger restaurant and you shouldn't have a problem or choose a table outside which are more plentiful after Covid. Some of the smaller ones it will be more difficult.

Consider using a left luggage service like Radical Storage where you can safely leave your bags at one of the businesses that participate in this service.

I have a different approach.

Buy some take-away and eat it on the train. You will have more time for sigt-seeing and a more relaxed meal.

We have done that several times and it can be quite nice to sit with a sandwich or a sushi box and a bottle of wine, while Italy rushes past outside the window. I don't know if it is exactly legal, but we have never had a problem. Of course we bring bags for the waste and take it with us when we leave the train.

I like and use the l.p.enersen approach, in fact I try to time rail travel to do just that, and most train stations in Europe have pretty decent food choices

Thanks to each one of the respondents. This is all food for thought!!!

We also have another issue to deal with, in that all three of us are vegan! I think eating on the train should be a wonderful thing to do. We used to do this all the time when we traveled in India. I wish everyone a happy Summer and happy travels.
