Carrying IPad around

I am considering purchasing Rick Steves guide bag for Ipad for carrying around as a day bag while touring Rome. Is it practical and safe to carry an Ipad around in Rome?

Yep. Just be aware when you set it down somewhere. If you're at a table, put your foot through the strap.

Be careful about the "cut and snatch" when walking around ... pedestrian walking up and cutting your strap in the back just as the accomplice on a scooter drives by to snatch the pack.

1. Learn how to lock or even wipe your IPad remotely in case it is stolen. You can find instructions on the Apple website. 2. Buy IPad insurance. It costs way less than a new IPad. If this thread listed all the known tricks of Italian thieves and pickpockets, it'd be 34 pages long. And that would just be the known tricks.

Lynne, Given the current popularity of the iPad, you'll need to be extremely vigilant. I've just finished watching the latest "feeding frenzy" on the late news with the current iPad. Even "the Woz" had to wait his turn in the queue! As the others have said don't lose sight of it, even for a few seconds. If you're stopping at a Café, probably a good idea to keep it out of sight as much as possible. I suspect that iPhones are probably a hot item too, so I will also have to be vigilant when I travel this year. Happy travels!

Hi Lynne, I carried my Ipad everywhere last year. ( We were in Venezia, Bologna, and Milano for one week in September. I would take it out of my bag anytime anywhere ( streets, restaurants, stores, ect. ) No problems, we always felt safe. Last year I forgot my Ipad in a shop on the Rialto bridge in Venezia, I only realized it when we were on the gondola 30 minutes later ( I was panicked , Ilove my Ipad), so I couldn't return immediately, but the lovely people at the store kept it in a safe place after spotting it , and returned it to me after my gondola ride.
There are good and bad people everywhere , just use common sense and enjoy. I bought a TIM microsim card for my Ipad so I had internet everywhere, very conveniant to get any info you want anytime! There is an app called " Find Iphone " which lets you locate, lock it, swipe it clear, or even send a high pitch sound so you can find it if you think it is close by, you can do this from another Iphone, Ipad, or computer. Safe travels

Take it. Be vigilant. Enjoy it. PacSafe has great sling-case/shoulder bags. More expensive than Rick's guide bags but worth every penny.
