Carrera Marble Quarry trip

We will be spending 4 days in Cinque Terre in May and are thinking of a day trip to the Carrera Marble mines. Any suggestions of the best tour companies or other ideas? Thanks so much! Karen Sortino

A great idea. I did this as part of R S Villages of Italy tour and loved it. We had no idea what to expect but all enjoyed the visit particularly the folk art marble sculptures illustrating how the marble was quarried in the past. These quarries supplied the marble that built much of Rome, statues by Leonardo and Bernini, and maybe even your kitchen counter! Worth visiting the main piazza in the nearby port town of Carrera which is paved with marble in fantastic designs and also the stacks of marble ready to shipped around the world.

Obviously we were expected and We just drove in our bus up to the visitor centre for our tour which was led by a retired quarrier who also had done many of the display sculptures. Google Carrera marble quarries for information on tours, etc.

It's cheap and easy to reach Carrera from Cinque Terre by train. If you want to enhance the experience, contact Sara who's listed in Rick's guidebook and arrange a tour. She was our local Carrera guide on a RS tour, and she was excellent. I believe she can meet you at the train station and take you up to the quarries for the tour.

The Carrara rail station may be also referred to as Avenza. The quarries can't be reached by public transport so a car or a tour rendezvous is a must. The old part of Carrara and it's duomo are worth seeing. Nearby is the house where Michelangelo had his studio.
