What tours are available to see and learn about Carrara quarries in Italy that are near Cinque Terra?
I used a guide recommended by Rick Steves last summer. Her name was Sara Massa and she was great. E-mail me for her contact info.
I did not use a guide and really did not feel it was necessary. However if you want to understand the geology and entire process from rock to polished product, it would be helpful. Realize that it is a working quarry and dusty etc as you would expect a quarry to be.
I enjoyed being in a world famous quarry where Leonardo and Michelango actually were to select their ideal marble for their sculpures. To me it was experiencing a little bit of Italian history.
JS, did you just drive to the quarry and walk through it, or perhaps observe from a viewing area? I'm surprised they allow visitors since it is a working quarry. How do they handle visitors? I've been trying to get information about touring the area as well and haven't found much.
