Carrara Marble Tour

Carrara marble quarry—-Has anyone been there? Did you like it? I’ve read about it and it sounds like quite an experience. Just wondering if it’s really worth the time and money. If you have been on it, do you remember what tour group you used? Thanks.

We stopped on our Village Italy tour. I did not find it memorable.

I'm interested in more info on this. My husbands company produces products out of this area and I wonder if my daughter and I would on our trip next year would like to stop by and see.

We have been visiting the area for a long time, and the Carrara quarries and the marble mountains are astonishing. I think you'll remember it for a long time. The whole area around Carrara is like another world. While some tours may just stop for a lecture at a scenic overlook with a souvenir shop - a tour into the various quarry areas is what you want. Here's an article that's quite informative.

Though it's much easier by car, I had an exchange with a traveler who did the tour and needed to get picked-up at the Carrara train station (named Avenza). She was well satisfied by the company in the article above: http://www.cavedimarmotours.com/it/

While there, a stop in Carrara itself to see the old part of town is very interesting. Besides the narrow old streets with houses with marble embellishment, there's Carrara's famous Duomo. Right near it is the house where Michelangelo lived and had a studio when he was in town selecting and prepping marble. There's some more description here: https://www.apathtolunch.com/2012/07/carrara-anarchy-michelangelo-marble.html

There's also the little town of Colonnata beyond the quarries to visit if you're interested in lardo as in Mario Batali.

I took a day trip where 4 x 4s took us up into the hills of a marble quarry near Carrara. Definitely a highlight! It may have been through viator.com.
