We would like to visit the Carrara Marble Quarries. Would it be best to stay in Carrara or Massa or somewhere else? We would like to take a tour. We understand there is one by jeep. Has anyone taken that tour? Our schedule is flexible and we will be using public transportation coming from Florence. We appreciate your help and suggestions.

If your main goal is the Carrara Marble Quarries, I’d actually suggest staying in Carrara itself. It’s the most convenient base for early tours and avoids extra transit from Massa or coastal towns.
It’ll take two hours from Florence whether by car or train, so I’d definitely stay closer. Sarzana is cute. I’ve heard good things about Pietrasanta.
It's not a long trip from Lucca, so that's an option. It's a longer day but very pretty drive if you loop north through Bagni di Lucca. Regardless of your route, you could also stop at Colonnata for the "epicenter" of lardo.
Ciao Charylm,
It sounds like you are planning a truly unique adventure! Yes, we absolutely recommend the Jeep tour! Several of our guests have taken it and they always come back amazed. It is the only way to reach the highest extraction points (some over 1,000 meters high) where the views of the sea and the white peaks are breathtaking. Carrara and Massa are interesting industrial towns, but you might also consider staying in Pietrasanta, Lido di Camaiore, or Viareggio and checking if the tour can pick you up from there.
