Carnivale in Venice? To miss or not to miss?

Hello all, Happy New Year! Just wanted to ask if anyone has gone to Venice for Carnivale? Is it too crowded? Too touristy? Worth visiting around Carnivale? Costume required? Thanks so much!

Angela, Do not miss this experience! Being a photographer who has traveled to Venice many times there is nothing quite like the misty blue dawn with the beautiful costumed people of Venice wandering the streets. Just get up at dawn to experience a whole different Venice. You can see some of my photos at
terrykathrynlawrence.com. I am returning next year. At the very least purchase a mask, bring a shawl or a cape and you have a costume....it was unforgetable. Busy, yes, touristy, maybe.... but a truly unique experience.

The way my friend described it didn't sound too exciting. He said it was like being a sardine. You walked slowly up one street, over a block, down another street, over a block, then started the circle again. He hadn't bought entrance to any of the balls. If he did it again, he said he would want a ball ticket just to be able to get off the street. Apparently some of the balls are extremely pricey but others aren't. It would be worth looking in to.
