Carnivale in Venice

Just wondering whether anyone has attended the Carnivale in Venice before. Has anyone attended one of the gala balls and are alot of the events in a certain area so we can book a hotel close by? If anyone has any useful websites, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Lisa
