We will be in Venice on the last two days of Carnival. Any suggestions on the best ways to maneuver, enjoy the Carnival and still see the main attractions? Our hotel is very near St Marks square so we will be in the thick of the action.
A friend went to Carnivale. He said it was packed and they ended up slowly walking a circular route, completely packed with Carnivale goers. Anything other than walking along with the crowd wasn't really an option.
He said, if he were going again, he would buy tickets to one of the numerous balls that are held during Carnivale. Many, if not all, of the balls are in palaces overlooking the hoard. You get out of the crowd and have a better view of the activities.
We didn't go to Venice during Carnival, but did on a day that was an ancient holiday where they race boats down the canals and people dressed in old costumes. It was so crowded that getting around was a pain..
I would not recommend going for Carnival.
